Yuyang Liu documents the dire reality of mental disease in China

Yuang Liu is a 23 years old chinese photographer who documented the lives of the severely mentally ill and their families in China. The purpose of this project was to explore the unique relationship between the mentally ill, their families, and the society, a category of people who is  often overlooked or completely ignoredThe project "At Home With Mental Illness" aims  also to highlight the inefficient of the government efforts.
Liu's project won him the Ian Parry scholarship, which is awarded to young photgraphers.

15-year-old Zhendong Liang, from Zhaoqing, China, is blowing to help his mother to make a fire. He was been expelled from his school since 2009, because his school teachers thought that he had bad influences to other students.






Yongyi Ou is a a 12 year old girl living in Zhaoqing, China. She's giving a kiss to her grand mother. The smiling girl standing in the front is Mei Lin while Yueyi Ou, the older sister. This is a family is composed of 5 people. 4 of them are suffring from a mental disease. The grand-mother, 83-year-old, has to support the family by her own. 


In this photo, Mei Lin is asking her daughter Xiaolin Long to go back home. Xiaolin usually stay out for several days. 



Jianwen Pang peeing in his house while smoking. He writes often some poems about his loneliness when he was locked with chains in the same place. 



Tong Xiao, 9-year-old, and his younger sister Ling Xiao, from  Maoming, China, are protecting their snacks box from the pig, while their mother, Tongying Liu, is eating her dinner alone in the corner.



Xiuyun Li is living in Maoming, China. she sits often in the living room. Her family earns only 1 USD per person per day. 





Shaoping Xiao is also from Maoming, China. She's 13 years old and lives with her 72-year-old father and psychotic mother. She's sitting alone in her bedroom which is full of garbages.



Jiagui lives in Zhaoqing, China. It's been now ten years since he stays at home. Jiagui suffers from schizophrenia, a mental disorder he got when he worked in Guangzhou with lots of pressure.
